Bit Shy 5 year antediluvian gelding ?
my 5 year old gelding sam has become very bit shy
i tight REALY BIT SHY
he will let u get up to him but when u try to get the bit surrounded by his mouth he throes his head as high in the upper air as he possibly can and when u get the bit in his mouth he is completely fine again he puts his head down when u put the bridle over his ears stand still when u mount he is a wonderful horse but the bit shyness is getting out of foot (he doesn't resist with a halter ether) somebody help
the bit is always cold contained by the beginning try warming it in your paw for awahile and then put it on... do it a couple of tims and see if it works
First, make certain your geldings' teeth aren't the problem. Sharp edges, wolf teeth, sore gums, etc could be the problem. Call a horse dentist or vet to check. Do this before you try any other remedy on this site.
Second, I think you are probably inadvertantly banging his teeth near the bit when you are putting it in or taking it out. This is the most common reason for this behavior. No amount of bit warm or goodies smeared on the bit will help. You need to change the approach you are bridling your horse. Get someone with experience to show you how before your gelding starts getting more violent give or take a few the whole thing.
Answers: try flavored bit wipes it give the bit a flavor and they can smell it also just practice a lot and he will get over it spend a morning just taking the bit in and out of his mouth and soon it will be no problem
tie his lead shorter so he cant throw his chief up.
possibly you're banging his teeth when u put the bit in. try to avoid that.
maybe smear apple babe-in-arms food on the bit/.
