Breeding a full-size horse to a small pony?

I'm looking for the research that was conducted about breeding a Clyde to a miniature horse. I have tried for pretty awhile tonight and nothing comes up. It talked about the foal self equal to the mares size at birth not the Clyde. I'd like to learn more about this. Thanks,

that sounds resembling a bad idea
What a terrible research project, what could the possible benefits of such research be. Those who conducted obviously care more about their findings than animal welfare.

You only have to put a clydesdale stallion and a miniature mare subsequent to each other to realise they could never mate without artificial insemination, so what was the point.

Foals are determined by the size of the mare's uterus, though beside such a big stallion, the clydesdale is not only big but a heavy horse, there would manifestly be a serious danger of the foal being unable to be born instinctively.

Anyone who knows anything about horses or breeding animals would have be able to tell them that without wasting the money for this research or the probable distress to the mares they used.

Shame on them, this is the sort of research that give scientists a bad name. Researching the bl**dy obvious beside no concern for the animals they use.
the small pony would probably die giving birth..it would be unnatural
I hope you are asking this for general knowledge and not because you are in actuality planning on doing this breeding.

I have heard that the foal will be born someone normal sized within relation to the size of the mare (in other words, if the mare is a pony, the foal will be born pony sized) but will probably mature larger than the mother. You have to regard as of the relation in size of the fetus to the uterus of the mare. She can only hold something that is so colossal, if the foal is too big, we will likely slip it.

I can't think of any sources sour the top of my head. have you attempted some of the vet school sites?

Good Luck
Why on Earth would anyone want to do such a thing? I know full well that the mare will control the size of the foal with her body ( something which some others here apparently do not) but this is ridiculous, not to mention chancy for everyone involved. Mini horses were bred down from some of the smaller pony breeds, and they are actually closer to ponies genetically than they are to horses, which means that any foal they would enjoy from a Clydesdale stallion would be subject to potentially serious problems at delivery. I personally can't imagine why anyone would want to breed such an animal- within are too many risks involved.

I wouldn't suggest that's such a smart idea. A Clydesdale would crush the Miniature if it bred, and if it survived, afterwards when it gives birth, the size of the foal would kill her. If its the other way around, a Miniature stallion couldn't manage!
Answers:    There be an article published in 1999 in "The Horse" Magazine by Les Sellnow that talked just about a Shetland mare being bred to a draft stallion via AI. And that the resulting foal was small, but grew larger after birth.

The full article could probably be read on the website, but there's a mention of it on this other website here:

I did find some interesting sites about pony drafts that aren't bigger than 58" but look approaching big drafts. However, looking at the different horses, it seems like average-sized riding ponies and Shetlands were used. I did see a 3/4 Clyde 1/4 Miniature but I would presume that perhaps a miniature would be too small overall.

.. i could say so many things right now..
A Clyde/mini breeding is not one that I would propose.

I have been looking into breeding my 14.3hh NSH mare with a 16.3hh Freisian and I be concerned about the size difference. My vet told me that the mare will typically grow the foal in uterus no larger than it can handle...however my skin is only a difference of two hands. I would not do the breeding you have suggested.
