Does anyone know what this might be?
My mare has a protrusion coming out of her left front hoof. It is slightly towards the back and not far from the fur strip. It appeared about 2 weeks ao. She had a swollen leg about a month ago and the farrier said it be a pulled tendon, she seems to have gotten over the limping and swollen leg but later this thing showed up on her hoof. She seems to hate when I pick her leg up look at her underside of hoof, surrounded by fact she really pulls very hard for me not to touch and she have always been very assured to let me clean hooves. Wondering if anyone can get sense of this. BTW, I rode her today and she stumbled. I know she has tender feet and hate gravel, I thought maybe that was what it was, but wondering whether that protrusion is causing discomfort too. She wears shoes, I just kept them sour when she pulled her tendon
i would telephone call your farrier and maybe your vet. i would check into maybe those shock absorbing pads you can put below the shoes. it could be a weird form of laminitis
First of adjectives, a pulled tendon takes months to heal, and you don't ride at adjectives. Did the vet confirm that diagnosis? You don't need the opinions of anyone on here.you need your vet to diagnose the injury. So, my warning is to get the vet to examine the injury asap. Don't call your farrier. If your farrier thought the tendon be pulled, and didn't advise you to call the vet, you don't want to trust his/her advice again.
call the farrier again... whether its not treated she could go lame in that foot...
there may be something stuck contained by the underside of her hoof, and, like with our nails, her hoof may be react to an injury, or just not being used to walking w/o shoes, so have a vet look at it
Call your vet to come out. your farrier should look at her again too. i dont know what it could be
Look smarty, if she has aching in her leg, you don't ride her. And you never ride on gravel. Quit riding her and get her some medical attention.
Answers: Try not to ride until you have both the vet and farrier come out and look at her, but its probably an abscess in her hoof trying to pop.
I agree with galloppal as per usual.
I meditate the only way to be sure of anything is to contact your farrier, and your vet whether the farrier feels its necessary. Its better to be safe than sorry. For the time one, I'd give your horse some rest until the farrier can come check things out! Good luck, I hope your mare feels a better
If I can't see what it looks approaching then it would be almost impossible to say what it is. Because you said it be near the hair line (coronary band) and it is protruding, I want to vote it is an abscess that tried to break thru at the coronary band and because of the location it may not have been competent to burst out. The other thing that I was thinking was; Is she a grey horse? They repeatedly get tumors and although this is an odd location it is possible but if she is not grey or white after I would say probably not a tumor. Take a picture and ask again. For an abscess, soak her foot in epsom salt and thaw out water for about 15 minutes once a day and after ward put a thick layer of Ichthimal over the area. Ichthimal is a black drawing solvent which sucks the infection out of the abscess. E-mail me at www.equinesportslife.com and agree to me know if it works or send a picture and I might be able to relief. I was a vet tech for a few years. Also, for a pulled tendon she should be on stall rest for 2-6 months and not allowed to use the muscle or she will end up lame permanently or worse off for longer.
