Getting a horse to come when call?

I need some tips on teaching my horse to come to me when I call him. Now that it is getting murky early, by the time I get off work and capture out to the barn it is dark. My horse is black, so he can be hard to find in the pasture! I other take him a treat when I get him, knowing this he still does not come when I call him. So, how can I instruct him to come?
Bucket of oats.I have found that horses can't resist them. Edit.. why the thumbs down I have owned many horses, at present I enjoy three.
start with your regular front line, get him to stay in one spot, hang around a moment, then tell him "come" & give him a cue w/his head line at the same time. when he gets to you, distribute him a treat & make a big deal over him.

Once he gets right with your regular lead line, switch to a lunge dash, & do the same thing with him. Eventually, he'll grasp the idea that coming when you call him is the greatest thing within the world!
Adding on to Jamie c also try to use his label, unless he dosent know his name. if he does then try calling him lately by his name and then make a big buy and sell over him and give him treats
ok... get his feed bucket and pack it with a little bit of food.

walk out to the pasture next to it.

call him first, then give the bucket rather shake, and call him again.

when he comes to the fence, put his halter/lead line on and reward him beside a treat.

REMEMBER!! reward him AFTER you have his halter on him. =)

he might decide to be sneaky and run off.

the subsequent day do it again. and the day after that, do it again. but beginning putting smaller quantity food in the bucket each day, until finally you wont hold the bucket anymore.

you can still reward him with treats!

then you should just enjoy to call him and he will come.

GOOD LUCK!
Answers:    Try the bucket training idea others have given you - this should be simple as you mainly want to go and get him to come in for dinner anyway.
Use a word (a call word) that you will ONLY use surrounded by this situation - I don't use their names as I have more than one horse I want in.
You can also attach a reflective cassette to the halter - that way a quick scan of the pasture with a flashlight will show you where on earth he is.
You have trained him to WAIT for you to bring him the treat - now train him to come and get his dinner.
Shake the bucket, use your ring up word , and do not go get him - it may take a bit of time but he will come surrounded by once he realizes you are not coming to get him.
Good Luck!
what I would do is a interweave up and beore you turn around after seeing the signs of a successful join up, call the horse's name and consequently turn. get the horse's attention a little more by calling the name. bring back him used to hearing his name when he wants to come to you anyways.
Our horses come when they hear us and i always treat them with apples / sugar / carrot our horses also know that grain will be waiting for them when they come in. Try having things arranged for him - grain in trough so that he knows it will be in attendance - you could just give him a handful no need to attain crazy.

Lizzie i agree that they will expect it everytime they head for the barn .. and why not? they get fed at dark anyway.

As for treats being expected my horse does know i keep them contained by my front hoodi pocket and she does nose around it. It has never gotten out of hand - for her - she is in recent times naturally laid back and her attention is easily diverted.

Without knowing it various people condition their horses to expecting treats for various reasons and whether your horse has nipping problems i would not suggest this.
Use grain and tap the side of the container. Your horse will get used to the sound and will come when you tap a container.
I can't come up with a good answer, but I wanted to articulate that using treats isn't a good idea. I used to use them a lot to engender my horse come but after just a month or so he started biting. and I've quit cold turkey and it is getting better, but he still does it and its very annoying, and sometimes bumpy. I think you would be ok every now and again, but if you use them constantly the horse will come to expect them and start nip and biting. good luck!
Give the horse a reason to come to you.
