I own this 2 and 1/2 gelding he is 15hh and he is a wonderful horse.?
I wanna teach him how to Jump how should i start should i lunge him? Can someone give me some steps what to do?
hes still too young
i wouldnt start until he is approximately 4 or 5
but start with poles on the ground at a trot
set up courses and just trot until he goes smoothly over them
next canter the poles
then you can put them up a little higher and consequently start from the trot again
do singe jumps once you get up to little vericles, then lines and later courses of 5 jumps
at 2 and 1/2 years old a horse is too young to lunge. A lot of people don't even start riding till they are over 3 let alone jump till over 4. Their bones don't finish growing untill around 5(sometimes longer) and jump at a young age can cause lameness and problems later on down the road.
i would freshly work on ground stuff with him and some flatwork. hope that helped
He is to young to start jumping first. Maybe start beside poles on the ground and have him walk and trot and canter over them. Make sure you don't submerge him he is still growing and could develop lameness later on in life!
He's too young to start jumping even so, but you could certainly start with the basics. Poles are a great tool for education a horse to balance and pay attention to their feet. Pick up a couple books or communicate to a trainer about some basic groundwork you could do to help prepare for jump later on.
Have fun.
Answers: Step 1 - Wait until he is AT LEAST 4 to jump. Doing so quicker can damage his legs.
