My TB Toby yawns seriously, mostly when he is relaxed. im not really worried, purely curiouse as to what he is doing?
my 21y/o TB (toby) has a habbit of streatching out his neck and yawning, it looks like he is yawning but im not certain thats actually what he is doing. he repeats this quite a few times over a couple of minutes, usually when he is relaxed.
he is decent, a bit lean, but good. im guessing he is just yawning but is there anything els it could be?
Yawning is a stress reliever for horses.
At least that's what I've always been told and it's stood true from my experiences.
A horse might yawn after an intense work out, letting the stress turn.
He might yawn multiple times in a relaxed stance, maybe relaxing himself further? Letting the stresses go.
I don't imagine there's anything wrong with your horse.
I think he's just...human being a horse =]
Not sure what your short form of TB stands for but most dogs and cats yawn and it has nil to do with being tired. It is called a peaceful signal. They use it to communicate with other dogs and cats and you too. It is a sign that they are either stressed and trying to unflustered themselves down or feel that another is stressed and they are trying to calm them down.
Turid Rugaas is a dog trainer from Europe who has done the most wonderful documentation of these behaviours. Completely amazing to memorize.
Most horses use this as a stretch as well as a calming signal. Sometimes surrounded by lieu of cribbing. If done a lot it can be a sign of something wrong in their necks.
Edit: D'uh, TB for thoroughbred. Sorry, it is delayed.
omg my horse is named toby too!!
its probably newly him stretching to get into a comfortable position
sometimes my toby stretches his neck and yawns
hes fine
Hey! my 18yr old TB mare does the same thing too! She other seems to do it after excercise before I groom her again then nurture her. She does it almost all the time, I'm not sure what it is though? Sorry I haven't answered your sound out, but it's interesting to see that other people's horses have similar habits.
Answers: Sounds resembling he is just yawning.
My TB yawns a lot too, usually after he have been worked. I think he is just circuitous down because he looks quite relaxed and happy.
Horses often "yawn" to stretch their jowl muscles. This is why most horses exhibit the behavior when you remove the bridle; however, they stretch when at rest as well.
if you are worried i would merely call your vet and get him/her to give him a check over! i hope everything turns out ok!!
p.s. my first horse's entitle was Tobi it's such a cute name!
