Olympic or professional show jump horse breeds?
I know that a lot of olympic or top show jumping horses are hanoverian, trakhener, or warmblood, ect. But is it possible to make it to "big times" next to just a thoroughbred? what about quarter horse? I know that it is awful giant hopes to want to make it that far, but its an inevitable dream of mine :)
As long as the horse is talented enough, any breed can do show jump!
The good looks of show jumping is that it is a performance sport. Breed does not matter. That said, a Hanoverian is bred to own all the qualities that one would look for in a pious jumper whereas a Shetland pony is not. It's an extreme example but my point is that some breeds will have an advantage because their confirmation is designed to fashion them better at it. I consider it unfair to ask a horse to do something it is not built to do either through confirmation or temperament. If they have the right structure, which heaps thoroughbreds and a few quarter horses do, and have the heart, which many of both breeds do, I say run for it! (BTW: Many, many top thoroughbred jumpers!)
Thoroughbred, sure!! I enjoy had the pleasure of owning a horse of this breed and he could jump a 6' fence. I own also seen TB's in the "big time" horse competitions. Very versatile breed.
In 1984, the Thoroughbred mare shown under the name Touch of Class won the gold decoration in individual jumping at the Los Angeles Olympic games. She started her career beneath the registered name Stillaspill and was winless in 6 starts on the racetrack. http://www.pedigreequery.com/stillaspill
In the 2008 Olympics, 7 of the eventer horses that made the troop or were alternates were Thoroughbreds. http://www.horseweb.com/articles/press/2...
Most of the jumping troop horses are listed as warmbloods; but when you check the pedigrees, they have Thoroughbreds up close in their pedigrees:

Absolutely it is possible to breed it to the top of the sport with a Thoroughbred.
TB's are good show jumping horses, QH could do it . I haven't see many .
Provided the horse can bound, you can make it. Karen O'Connor jumped a perfect round contained by the Kentucky Rolex on a 14 hh pony (Teddy O'Connor) and the pair of them did extremely well in other events.
So, I suppose that if a pony can clear jumps that big, then why not?
Yes of course! Look at Karen O'Conner.! Her horse theodore O'Conner (Teddy) was solely a 14'1 shetland/arabian/thoroughbred cross and she took part in huge national competiotinos with him. He be the reining 2007 Pan american games indivisual and team gold medalist, and had top 6 finishes t the rolex within kentucky. Sadly he was euthanized due to a severe laceratoin in his hind leg. It honestly depends on the hhorses heart and ability. Anything is possible!
Yes, Thoroughbreds can get it! I own an OTTB and he easily jumps 5'! We'll be competing in jumper next season and people say he could smoothly reach level 5/6!
I suggest that you look at my friend's video on youtube; Her TB does level 5 & 6 jumpers!

Answers: Yes, it IS possible for ANY talented horse of any breed to make it to the big time.
Movement, temperment, conformation, training, talent and HEART adjectives play an important role in how successful any horse becomes contained by any given discipline.
Taller horses would have some advantage over a smaller one when attempting very high-ranking jumps, but I have seen small Arabians next to LOTS of HEART jump higher, faster, and wider. Doesn't seen possible somehow, does it?
TBs can do it, and it's a bit smaller amount likely that a QH can, but it really depends on the individual horse.
powerfully im not really sure of the statistics but i know one of the horses that was gonna be in this years olympics be a pony...
he wasnt in it cause he coliced or something and had to be put down
so really any horse can be within the olympics if its talented enough
If the horse has the heart and talent anything is possible! Look at Teddy O'Connor
Yeah, it is possible. Usually most warmbloods have alot of TB within them...they are just bred with larger boned horses to improve on the average TB's watery legs which have a difficult time withstanding the larger jumps. Normally if you see a PURE TB within a pro competition they are rather larged bone, if you look about slim to none of the horses own petit bones...they just can't or they wont last long jumping over 5ft+ fence.
