People unloading their horses - trend, economics, or "that time of the year"?

I belong to several yahoo groups, and I've noticed the very marked increase within horses available for sale - even for FREE. Newby's, champions, brood mares...no prejudice. All or most of the stock is for sale.

What is your perspective on this?
Have you notice it, as well?

its the economy. people can't afford them anymore.
It's kinda sad.But good since I am looking for one. This may just be me but I enjoy heard that the number of abandoned/underfed horses are increasing because of hard times. So I hope the economy get better for the horses' sake.
Answers:    Well the horse market's in the tank whether you haven't noticed. Because of the economy, the closures of the slaughter houses and the increase in pricing of hay and particle, not to mention the costs of fuel have all played an inportant roles in WHY horse's aren't selling. 3 years ago during the summer, you could buy a bale of honest quality alfalfa hay (3 string, 100LB +) for $9.00/bale. It went up to $17.95 last winter and NEVER come down! Grain, which was once $9.00 a bag 3 yrs ago (50LB bags) now are over a halft again that price.

The antiquated folk who were buying "Killers" which were aged or crippled or just unwanted horses, immediately buy mid grade horses so that they can handle the hauling to Mexico or Canada.

So, folks are unloading. Getting rid of anything they really don''t need and horses are on the top of the inventory.
I havn't noticed that, only slightly as my friend get offered an ex racehorse, which she took (for free) I'm guessing its the economic climate?
the economy's tanking. horses are expensive. people are trying to get their friends into good homes beforehand they can't afford to feed them anymore.
