(please answer fast) WHY DOES...?
fresh mowed grass give horses colic? Does it? If so how much of it do they have to eat to obtain colic? how fast will they get colic? I REALLY NEED HELP BECAUSE SOMEONE EMPTIED A BUNCH OF FRESHLY MOWED GRASS IN MY PONIES PADDOCK AND SHE ATE ALOT OF IT! will she get colic? I througfh out everything disappeared as soon as i noticed it! please help me!
There are two dangers in feed a horse or pony freshly cut grass. The first is that they can easily overeat because it is already "picked" for them and the sugar content is beginning to change main to laminitis and the second is that cut grass when left in piles on the ground promptly ferments which can cause colic.
First off dont madness and automatically assume your pony will colic. If it was very fresh grass she will probably be just fine. The risk of laminitis is low because of the time of year. If it be spring grass and the pony was not used to it there would be a bit more effect for concern.
Watch her for the evening. Give her plenty of water, free choice exercise and observe. Listen for gut sounds. As long as her stomach is rumbling pretty constantly she is digesting her "treat" normally. If you see her in obvious spasm .. sweating, pawing, rolling, excessively yawning or her gut sounds completely stop for a long period of time hold on to her moving and call your vet.
I really think she will be ok, hon. Good luck.
Mowed grass is only really bad for horses if it have been allowed to ferment or go rancid for a few hours or days...if its simply been cut and they dumped it into her paddock, if she ate a bit it shouldnt be a huge deal...merely clean it up as best you can now that you have found it...the other issue is whether she isnt on grass normally, a little wont hurt her, but fair sized amount could create her to get gas colic from the difference in her diet...if she does colic from it, its probably gas colic, hang on to her walking and she should pass the gas, if she doesnt pass anything contained by about 1-2 hours of walking, call the vet out for help, she may requirement to get tubed to relieve her gas...
Good Luck,
BB
She won't colic...but maybe founder. Don't give her any food & call the vet. Watch her whether she starts looking sore on the front feet & stands parked out with weight on the hind. When my horse foundered my vet give her bute...I'd ask the vet if you should give her some while you wait for them to come out (if you enjoy any).
Fresh mowed grass could give a horse colic or laminitis whether it is a sudden change in diet or they are not used to the grass. If she be going to colic, I would expect to see symptoms within the next 2-4 hours. The other thing you stipulation to worry about is choke. Sometimes the small grass clipping get caught surrounded by the horse's throat causing choke. If you see nasal discharge or hear a lot of coughing, that may be what you are dealing with. You might necessitate to call your vet and have him/her on standby.
She shouldn't get colic. Where did you hear that? She might founder if they gave her profusely, but won't kill her if treated.
Your horse won't get colic from that.
She won't colic.
I'd be more worried about any gas/oil that's leaked while mowing that could be in the grass she could enjoy eaten.
I never let my horse eat mown grass because I'm crazy paranoid almost that.
Answers: Well get your bran out hurriedly and make a mash. Find out whoever did this because it can colic or founder a horse/pony. Keep a careful eye on her and whether she starts acting colicky, CALL your vet.
whether she does colic i suggest mineral oil and bran. walk her out...you know the drill. well brought-up luck!
your horse is going to be ok. if you own one, ask a horse instructer or another horsey person. in my experience horses colic when they get a promptly change in diet or if they roll and go and get their intestines tangled but make sure he get some corn oil tonight. it will help wash out his stomach. hope hes better soon.
ps he will be fine.
She'll get colic within the next 5 days. =|
