To the Model Horse (Breyer / Peter Stone) Artists, Sellers, Buyers?
I come across the most incredibly detailed and life-like model horses for sale. Some look so realistic that I expect them to take a wide breath and begin walking.
I am perplexed that when the artist goes to such incredible detail as to show veins, nail in hooves, varying coat pigmentation, gender specific detail, carve detail surrounded by the ears, that one thing just jumps out at me that purely doesn't "FIT".
Why in the world are the tails and manes seemingly just sloppily painted on, beside virtually no detail, very little variances in color, no single strokes of the hair as it cascade downward. It's like Rembrandt did the body, and a 6 yr old did the mane and tail.
Am I the only one who see this? I can't justify even bidding on one of those model horses, when the hair detail is horrible.
I've attached a prime example:

Or, look it up with Ebay Auction # 300271427429.
Thanks!

It is a REPAINT. Not a original
I completely agree!
Answers: I know what you're adage. It's like, if they can put so much detail and effort into the body, why can't they do the mane and tail? Maybe there's some idea. I imagine making a realistic mane and tail would be hard, mostly because for those, you're discussion about thousands and thousands and thousands of thin hairs. In lay down to make those look as real as the rest...well...believe how long that would take. I think I would go crazy! Maybe that's why profoundly of custom-makers will actually use mohair and replace the resin manes and tails with that, so they don't hold to worry about painting it.
But, I enjoy no idea as to why.
I'm actually going to try to custom paint one for the first time, but I'm sure mine won't look anything close to those ones on Ebay.
