Coolers are used for several things. The main reason they are used is when it is cold external and your horse gets hot and sweaty, you put the cooler on them to keep the horse from getting a chill.

The cooler prevents the horse from cooling down too fast and getting sick. They are mostly made out of wool, which wicks the sweat from the horse's body and helps the horse dry out in a warm and comfortable deportment.

Another use for a cooler is to keep the horse and saddle clean at a show right before going into the ring. Or whether you have body clipped the horse, a cooler is used to keep the horse warm since it doesn't hold any hair.

coolers are a type of blanket you put on a horse after a long ride. your suppose to walk your horse with it on 30 minutes beside a lead rope. then let her/him rest for a bit, the apology to do this is so the muscles dont tighten and the horse wont go lame(you wont be able to ride it anymore due to the legs)
