What is toxic colic?
i asked a question earlier about my horse could possibly be pregnant. i asked on why she be sensitive to her stomach and all. one of the anwers was that it could be lethal colic. so what is toxic colic?
Lethal colic is a toxic colic! Be careful with it! :)
I come up with she just meant it to refer to the fact that some colics are serious and life-threatening. I also read your other sound out. Horses do not typically try to lie down all of the time when they are pregnant. They DO do this when they are colicking. Colic that comes and goes over days can be associated next to things like ingestion of sand, or sand colic. Do you live in an area where on earth the ground is sandy? In fact, this kind of situation is highly typical of sand colic. My direction is that you get on the phone to the vet, and describe everything you have observed, for how long it has be going on, and how often each day it have occurred. Any other observations should be listed, and a complete depiction of what she has been eating every afternoon, with any changes that may have be made, such as a new supply of hay, etc.
As for lethal colics, the conditions leading up to one could conceivably look resembling this., although it is highly unlikely. Bowel twists start with a 180 degree of rotation which produce no symptoms. These may be present for years. If the rotation suddenly advance, it usually causes complete impasse of the bowel, and you have a lethal colic. It is possible, but not probable, that a minor rotational advancement might only slightly delay the intestine, and cause this.not likely though.
And, the vet should check for pregnancy if it might be possible, since right prenatal care is vital.
My mare basically had a baby, and when i would touch her stomach she would NOT be sensitive. Colic happens when your horse get too much of a sweet thing. Lethal Colic is when your horse gets SOOOOO much of a sweet thing, ex. grass, cookies, etc. , that your horse is contained by danger of dyeing. Good luck. And send my best wishes to your horse.
fatal colic is a fatal belly ache. Or probably a torsion of the bowel which is what they may have meant she'd be in serious straits.
A torsion of the bowel funds that a horse has manged to put a loop or twist in their intestinal tract and it tend to go gangrenous within hours very generally fatal unless a lot of money iis spent quickly
Answers: I absolutely doubt that your horse has lethal colic.. But I conjecture that the person that advised you that this could be the case be totally out of their minds...
As with the earlier answer, lethal simply manner deadly..
Another person has mentioned the "poisonous white disease" which has nothing whatsoever to do with toxic colic (just that they both have "lethal" in the name...
Colic, is a problem inside the digestive tract.. it can be caused by a food blockage along your horse's intestines, (impaction colic) or by a twist in the intestine (torsion colic) , by parasites, eating sand and a few other types that you can easily find by doing an internet turn out for "types colic horse" Colic that is "lethal" is just another way of dictum fatal or deadly.. A BAD case of colic can eradicate within hours, but I have also seen some exceptionally sick horses produce it through, so you'll only truly know if it's a lethal casing, if the horse has actually died.
The symptoms of colic are agitation, the horse will commonly sweat and be in apparent pain, will see (or try to bite) at it's sides and will try to lie down and roll repeatedly...
If you see this behavior, and it's not just that your horse found a sandy spot to roll in, you should 1) call for the vet for advice, and 2) try to make sure that the horse doesn't roll, and preserve walking the horse around until the vet arrives...
If you are in any doubt about your mares pregnancy, just (again) contribute the vet a call, and they will either come out and test her by taking a blood or ultrasound scan (expensive) or your vet may be likely to test a urine sample for you, which is often much much cheaper.. In any armour, a call to your vet should clear it all up...
I certainly hope that your horse is a long, long course from anything lethal :)
Good luck with the horse :) (and the baby whether she actually has one!)
[Edit.. just a small point, that I in a minute see that you know all about colic (and I hope not from personal experience, as it can be truly nasty..) However, I focus that a small mention about the symptoms of colic might be helpful and lifesaving to other new owners that might come along, so I won't erase the colic symptoms bit... Truly hope your mare is doing much better presently, and that you don't keep bumping into idiots that randomly claim that your horse has some nice of fatal illness without certainly being able to diagnose it ;) Good luck!.. Oh.. and not trying to be rude.. But Madylant is the first being I've ever heard of that's had a foal... Sure hope she really means OWNED one!! (gave me a chuckle!!)
Lethal colic is colic that results in the horse's disappearance.
There are many kinds of colic - twisted gut, gas, impaction, and others. They are difficult for the lay character to tell apart. Almost any type of colic has the potential to be lethal.
The lethal white syndrome, intestinal aganglionosis, is an autosomal recessive malformation seen in foals from two overo paint parents. The color pattern for overo paints can be confusing, but mostly these horses have white coloring under their belly and on the sides of the nouns and abdomen. White does not generally cross the back but near are exceptions.
Lethal white foals are characterized by an unpigmented (white) hair coat and light blue eyes (irises), and show intestinal colic in the first few days of life span. These foals experience colic because they lack the proper nervous supply (myenteric ganglia) in the terminal portions of the ileum (end of the small intestine), cecum and entire colon (large intestine).
This is due to a irregularity in the genes that regulate the development of a certain string of embryonic cells that later mature into two types of cell: cells that p
It basically mechanism deadly or that it's colic that can kill.
If you don't know what lethal colic is, you shouldn't be owning horses. Give your horses to someone who know how to take care of them. A trainer, shelter, or riding barn is fine. Lethal means terminal. Colic is a horse sickness that requires immediate medical attention. So, lethal colic is colic that can kill a horse. Which, whether left untreated, all colics have the potential of anyone. This is something you should have learned about years since you got your mare, and you should have immediately renowned the symptoms. Without the vet there, she is seriously sick and she can die at any moment. Call up the vet ASAP and after the whole thing is over, administer her to someone who knows how to take care of a horse.
colic is a stomach problem. lethal is word for deadly. so stony or serious colic. if it is colic it could kill her very glib. surgery for colic can get quite spendy though. like surrounded by the thousands. if your not sure ask a vet for a test.
