What is Indian leather made from?
I am about to purchase a Indian leather saddle and i would like to know what it is made from and whether it is good ability.
i bought a black indian leather saddle 3 yrs ago when i was just riding a ladies pony for her. i loved that saddle, it wasnt the flashiest thing ive sit on but its still good, and i ended up selling it to a young girl and she still uses it so dont below estimate its use! 5 years and still looking fine
Indian leather is CHEAP, CHEAP,CHEAP! saddle made in india and mexico are on the lowest end of quality. BEWARE... indian leather is brown with urine and it STINKS! it will stink up your tack room (or house, or wherever you store your saddle). indian leather is very brittle and stiff approaching someone else mentioned. if you get it wet it will go down apart. i highly advise against buying anything made in india or mexico. acquire a used saddle made in england or the usa for the same price as a new cheap saddle and you'll be FAR better rotten
**india mainly makes leather from water buffalo, as it is against the hindu religion to slaughter a cow. marine buffalo is actually a decent source of leather, but indian tanning practices are horrible and their leather quality is outstandingly low
Indian leather? Like the feather contained by the hair Indian? Or the kind from India?
If the Native American it might be just rawhide. If its Indian leather I wouldn't know.
Indian leather is made from low quality leather. Its like cardboard. I do not recommend any saddle made from India. The best quality is from England, next USA, then Argintina, then India, etc.
Answers: Indian leather is the cheapest leather offered for English saddles and tack. The other poster was right about the poor tanning part. It's more pourous and stretches. Won't hold up for any duration with use.
For your money, I'd look on ebay and find something more suitable for your uses that's made in Europe. Look at older Stubbens, Kieffers, Pariani, Crumps or Crosbys.
