Anyone enjoy their stallions living together along near mares and geldings contained by one flock?
We are entering our 3rd year of a study with our herd of 2 stallions, 5 mares and 2 geldings. They live together as a family and are hugely happy together. Does anyone have any experience with this considerate of situation and how is it working out for you?
For about 5 years immediately we've had a stallion, about 5 mares and 3 geldings out together. They get along without blemish fine.
We haven't kept out stally with any mares as we don't want to risk them individual bred.. or lets face it, have them smash him up. He does go out with a band of geldings surrounded by a 20+ acre pasture though and they get along just fine.
Answers: I have no geldings as for me as a breeder they are dead end animals.
I also do not put my stallions out near my mares for several reasons. First I want to control when they breed IF they breed which mare to which stallion. Also I do not live cover any mare here. They are all breed AI to make certain no one gets hurt.
Putting 1 stallion out with mares who are adjectives bred is one thing however I would NEVER put a stallion out with mare who where not and even more so I would never put 2 breeding aged stallions out near mares. You are only asking for trouble when they start to fight over the mares and they will.
