Answers: Do read this. I made this to answer questions resembling this. It has most of the hermit crab basics(I say most surrounded by the event I've forgotten something).
Aragonite sand is a good substrate. It's just expensive. Wood chips are not good substrates at adjectives. Do not, under any circumstances buy them. Be wary of "hermit crab" products. Most are refuse. Smaller crabs are generally hardier than jumbos.
Just so you know, this is how you really sex hermits.

As I always articulate, email me for any additional questions(case you don't read the whole thing).
Here are the basics:
The 10 gallon(absolute minimum cistern size) tank itself should run you around $10-$15.
I'm not sure how much a glass or plexi chalice lid costs.
An under tank heater should run you $21. An 8 watt should fry the tank nicely.

Eco Earth is a very cheap substrate, one brick is $5 and should be enough enough to fill the tank(online it's cheaper).

A 5-gallon bag of the deep salt to make salt water(a MUST for loner crabs) will costs between $4-$6.

Shells for the crab are very cheap, stir to a dollar store. If the dollar store is unreliable, go to Wal Mart or a craft store. It's $5 for a small bag of shells which is MUCH lower than most pet stores and other "hermit crab" vendor prices. 3 shells per crab.
Buy three non metallic bowls for food, salt, and fresh water. One bowl is usually $5-$10.
The crabs themselves will costs $5-$11 dollars at a pet store.
Decoration sagacious, I've found a lot of nice things at dollar stores. Just remember they need things to play with and hidey holes.
Feeding crabs isn't as simple as buying a item of crab food. They are scavengers in the wild and obligation a wide variety of diets. This is a great website to help steer you contained by the right direction food wise.

If you're really interested in keeping hermies, do some reasearch. There are many great sites on the net. You can also ask me for advice, my email's open.
We have a hermit crab and she is 4 years prehistoric. We had quite a few with her but they would die. Her dub is Lucky. And all I do is she is in a dome aquarium, I use aquarium sand, the colored sand put that in the bottom of the dry aquarium, after you can use a little bit of aquarium rocks and mix in the sand for grip for them. Then I have a dampen dish just for hermit crabs and a sponge that I split in partly so it will lay flat on the bottom. My hermit crab likes to eat a pitch of goldfish food, ascetic crab Neopolitan cookies ( witch I give her 3), Crab Island-fruit & flower crab food, And hermit crab cakes roughly 3. i put all this food ( just a pinch of each contained by a shell. Make sure your dishes and the shell you use is clean and dried before you use it for the ascetic crab. Then there is hut it there for her to hide. and you can carry some fake water plants for aquariums and put in in attendance they love to climb. go up and back down. It is neat and fun to monitor our hermit crab. You can boil an egg and give it a little also the cheese puff chips you can chomp through. Well put one in and your hermit crab will go to town on it. They love them. Also you don't really own to buy more than 1 hermit crab to make sure it lives. I know from experience. 1 is adjectives we have now since the rest died the first we got this one and we have about 6 in there and none of them made it. We enjoy had Lucky all to her self for 4 years. Also i about forgot to describe you hermit crabs like to be sprayed with a thaw water bottle. Just take your crab out of the aquarium and hold it and spray it with only warm water. They love it. We can even give ours kisses. And we bargain to her. Why she is a her. is that females have hairy legs and the males don't. Have fun and good luck I know we love our loner crab. Oh don't forget to have some shells like what they have surrounded by their body to cover them They like the same shape but bigger. So look close to the shell your hermit crab comes within, cause they are picky.
