Pregnant Yearling Heifer Holstein?
i have a yearling heifer holstein calf and she might be pregnant. is it a bad thing and could she die from it. please oblige
Answers: working at a dairy for years I have seen them breed long yearlings many several times. Although I do not agree with it but that is coming more from a horse breeder which is what I do and have done for a long time.
Cows are different next horses in many ways. One is they do not live as long. They tend to have a easier time calving to a substantial extent and have fewer problems then horses.
I would however own a vet check her to see if she is bred and if so make certain she gets the vaccines she needs and that you have an concept of when she is do so you can keep an eye on her. All the cow/heifers where put into a large stall at the dairy so they could be watch when it looked like they where close.
Well - when was she bred? If it be recently they can abort it using a shot (talk to the vet). If it wasn't recently it's better if she be a long yearling versus a younger yearling. Either way - be knowledgable on how to "pull a calf." Best wishes!!
