Ball Python ownership Question?
Ive gotten many different opinions from my research so ill ask you guys. What is everything entity i need to own a ball python.(cage size,bedding,how to control and what humidity is needed, handling ect.)
Answers: Full grown ball python requirements at least a 20 gallon long aquarium with locked down lid (either clips or bungee cords work best)
I use coconut bark bedding but you can use tabloid, astroturf, aspen shavings, but NOT SAND
water dish big enough for the snake to soak in
boil lamp on one end of the cage (temp around 85-90)
other shutting down of cage between 75-85
hide box on each run out of the cage (identical if possible)
humidity should stay above 50%, but higher when shedding (can also spray the snake when it sheds--this softens the skin)
Handle each day except after feeding and during shedding for 10-30 minutes
Feed a baby every 3-4 days, a yearling every week and a 3 year or elder every 1 to 2 weeks. Feed outside of housing enclosure to prevent "cage aggression"
I agree near answerer #1. I use aspen pellets with newspaper below it for bedding. It is safe if ingested but shavings or bark beddings are not. I enjoy my 2 balls in an aquarium designed for reptiles Its about 45 gallons. Its not as high as a fish tank and its wider, giving more floor space. It has a sliding screen lid which locks and you can put a pin within the front tab to prevent escape. I also have a few smaller tanks for separating hatchlings. I use a long (aquarium style) light designed for lofty heat bulbs with room for 2 heat bulbs. One sunshine light and one night light. And an lower than tank heater. Everything is plugged into a timer so i can easily control the amount of boil and light. One more thing. Get one that is already intake prekilled or frozen food. Live food can severely bite and injure a snake.
