Are giant rabbit breeds safer from attack by stoats etc?
My dad used to have ordinary sized pet rabbits, which he loved, and they had the run of a huge garden that be rabbit-fenced. He put them in a hutch at night.
Sadly one night it get dark early and when he got domestic a pine marten (animal like a big stoat) had killed the rabbits and some hens.
My sound out is, if he got one of these very ample breeds, would it be safer from these animals? He has geese and they can stay out all night and not be kill because they are so big. There are no foxes where we live.
No even the giant rabbits aren't safe and sound from them. The geese are safer because they can be very aggressive.
I wouldnt say so, no. Having three ferrets as pets I can really testify to the pluckiness of weasels.they will take on animals plentiful times their size...pine martens are teeny weeny, smaller than a lot of rabbits, but it didnt stop them. They would just see giant bunnies as a very voluminous meal, sorry...they may be big but they still smell, look and act like bunnies to weasels. Maybe your dad could get hold of a shed or something and keep them inside a hutch or inside a shed? Or cage them int he house at night?
Answers: I agree with the previous poster that a rabbit is a rabbit. Geese can be moved out outside at night because they are quite aggressive towards predators and intruders onto their realm, and can look after themselves. A giant bunny is still a bunny and I can imagine would still be very tempting to the local ermine population, lucklessly.
