I deliberate the gerbil is better pet...I've had all my gerbils for the full life expectancy. They're so much fun to survey. They are quite active
I'm pretty certain they live about the same and a gerbil is faster. BUT, from experience, a rat is a MUCH better pet. All of my gerbils have be mean things I have regretted and not wanted to hold. My rat, Tetris, have been awesome. He is going on 3 years and is clean, neat, DOES NOT SMELL, nicer, and an adjectives around better pet. He sits on my shoulder or in a hoodie pocket and just chills. He has be better then ANY gerbil I have ever had!

they can both live by them selfs, but i know rats REALLY like the company of another rat of the same gender.
i estimate rats live longer, not sure.
RATS ARE BETTER PETS! they are much more friendly, and can ride around on your shoulder, and are sweet, and are the most intelligent rodents.
They probably don't have too much of a difference in smell
im guessing a rat smells worse gerbils r ugly & theyre tail can be pulled past its sell-by date
