Im thinking of geting a rat but is it best to hang on to two of like sex? or one on its own.?

procure 2 of the same sex. and males dont always fight. i own 2 11 month old male rats, and not once have they gone through the agressive stage. whether you only have one rat ive read it can die from depression
two of the same sex, manly rats definatley make the better pets over female rats, although male rats do smell more than womanly rats so they need to be cleaned much more regularly.
Rats should not be kept on their own, they get very lonely, next to all of my rats, when one of the pair dies, usually the other one misses his/her friend so much that they die shortly after, they are such sociable animals, they involve lots of handling and affection.
But they make great pets!!
if you get two, attain both FEMALES. Apparently males *can* fight really badly!

(I say *can* because it might not arise to you - i'd rather be safe than sorry!)
Yes, they do need a partner. Taking thoroughness of two rats usually isn't too expensive in my oppinoin. It might be for others, though, since their vet bills aren't cheap.

But if you want females, it's best not to bring back them from a pet store that doesn't separate boys from girls. If someone that works there says they're too young to find pregnant, they're wrong. Rats become sexually mature at 5 weeks, that's when it's time to separate. If they're under 5 weeks, they should be with their mother.
Definetely get a few of them.
Here's a little something that I imagine will be of interest to you.

Don’t know which gender?
Males are messier and smellier and lazier. But if you like a cuddle rat, males are the path to go. Sometimes they can be more aggressive, so you’ll need to have them achieve used to you. Females are much more curious, and would rather have an adventure.

Buddies:
If you buy one rat, you involve to get another one. Anyone who has owned rats or breeds them will tell you that you want at least two or more (same gender) for them to be happy and healthy. If you single have one, it will most likely become being antisocial, timid, depressed, or even aggressive no concern how much attention or affection you give him. They are social animals, and will only be friendlier with you whether they have a buddy. And really, one extra rat hardly make any difference as far as care is concerned.

Hope that helps.
Definitely 2
if not they will perform crazy
Kiwi used to run around all night and keep me up until i get Butterz,
they are real sweeties!
Rats are social creatures, so you should definitely attain two. Personally, I got two of the same sex (females) because I didn't want any babies. The females are more well mannered over the males because the males are more aggressive and apt to bite you. I would procure 2 females.
I had two males call Rodney and Delboy (from the sitcom Only fools and horses) Occasionally they did fight but not often and they generally seem to love each others company they used to groom and look after each other, sadly Delboy have a tumor and had to be put to sleep, Rodney was lost without him, he newly gave up eating and died from stress - accordingly to the vet. Since later I have had two females their lovely together but they just cant replace my two males. And to those who suppose rats are Gross! domestic rats are actually very hygienic.
Answers:    Always get two of the same sex. Rats are very social and will be depressing alone. This can cause behavioural problems and shorten their life. Don't worry that have two will stop them becoming tame with you-it won't. On the other paw if you keep one alone it may well be so depressing or aggressive due to being lonely that you will never be able to safely bar it.

Which gender you buy is a tricky choice. Males smell slightly more so will need a bit more cage cleaning out but in opposition they are lazier and will sit there and be cuddled by you for hours once tame. Females like cuddles too but are a bit more hyper and will spend more time scamper round the room exploring when you have them out.

Remember to buy the largest cage you can afford for them and I'd also recommend reading a lot more more or less them first-they are the most demanding (and rewarding) pet rodent and are not something you should get unless your sure they are right for you.
Get two female rats. Male rats will fight. I have one feminine rat, but get two female rats, they will be happier. Hope my answer help! (Rats receive great pets, and they are NOT gross like that one answer said!)
one on its own whether i was you lol x
i say hold on to one of the same sex becuse the can fight and end up hurting themselves
Rats are social animals so two of the same sex. one would be lonely and bored.
They're gross.
What will start to you whether you chomp through a hamster?   Pet mouse grill, produce and bads of pets?   My cats and a hamster?   How complex is it to obtain rid of mites within rats?
