Is at hand something wrong beside my gerbil? Or... *10 points*?
Hi, thanks for clicking on my question.
I have 2 gerbils, within a multilevel cage. One of them likes to eat a great deal, and is more 'adventurous'. They are both males, close to a year and a half.
The other gerbil, Sniffles, is much different. I hear him squeaking sometimes, and his foot rapidly tapping. Also, whenever I pick him up to tolerate him run around, he feels weaker? I make sure I am really calm, though. He also is ADDICTED to his mesh wheel! ^__^ For the most part, he seems lively.
They have fresh water, clean carefresh bedding, and worthy food. Also, loads of toys. Sometimes I even give them small fresh fruits/veggies that they're allowed to have. Ex. a small part of an apple
But can someone explain to me why he feels a little weak? I also SOMETIMES distribute them special vitamin drops for their water. Is that bad?
Also, if you can answer this :
Is it OK to rub a litte bit of tub dust on their fur, and then help wipe it off. It's lone if they smell. I do this rarely.
THANKS SOOO SOOO MUCH 10 points :D
lol i dont need 10 points xD
but i suppose that you should try and introduce two female girbils into your cage or u can give sniffles a break perhaps his addiction to the mesh wheel is making him sick. Also the bath dust shouldnt have any effect, only make sure u get it adjectives off when u whipe them ^_^
Well, what do you scrounging by your gerbil feels weak? Maybe he's sleepy. However, usually, two mannish rodents should not be in the same cage. Since your's is multilevel, I chew over they'll be fine. Provide them with like two different water and food dishes. And yes, it's ok to rub hip bath dust on their fur. Try not to get too much on their face though.
That's how Sniffles simply is. He's a bit weaker than the other one. Just take humans for ex. some are bigger and stronger. It's ok to put a little bit of bath dust. be shure to wipe it sour because you don't want your girbil eating it!
I have the same entity going on with my rats. Cassidy is a big fawn girl that loves to eat, when zingya, the smaller one, is more... dainty.
Its just how near bred. Like the runt of the litter I guess you could say. and if he uses the wheel more, he's probably getting alot more excersie later you think, and losing weight.
hope i helped.
Your Sniffles could have a wide range of condition issues, from parasites, to infection, to genetic defects like epiliepsy, to only just being the less dominant of the two, and more nervous, and more pushed around.
Are they neuter? Unneutered males may bully each other more.
If he's eating well, and exercising ably, and doesn't have diarrhea, there may not be a lot you can do.
I hope you parsimonious "Chinchilla dust"...not human bath powder?? Human powder is often talcum which is quite toxic, particularly to lungs...and of course gerbils sniff.
Sounds like you're doing your best to give them great little rodent lives. so , gratitude for being a very good owner :)
it may be genetic that he feels weak and rubbing tub dust in his fur is not good for him because if you evacuate some in his fur it may lead to other problems and his foot may tap because he is relaxed or itching himself
Answers: ive got 3 gerbils, males approximately the same age as yours and 1 of them eats a lot more & is deeply bigger and one of them is a lot smaller and feels weaker but its just that they enjoy different builds. all 3 of mine tap their feet which they in recent times do as a natural instinct to alert the others that somethings new, any theres danger, or someones approached the cage or food is near. its ok to wipe dust onto their coats as long as you bring in sure it doesnt get left on and feed them SMALL amounts of greens is also fine. and the vitamins are good, although personally i dont use them for my gerbils.
hope this helps you
He might own an unhealthy addiction to his wheel. I would take it out for a few days. He might also hold allergies to his bedding, Carefresh is quite dusty and isn't the healthiest idea. I would definitely switch to Aspen. It's much improved and it can be recycled. Maybe start giving him extra food such as pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds. What type of food are you feed him? I switched mine over to home made.
The vitamin drops are healthy for gerbils in bag they are lacking certain vitamins. But I would only use it once a week as it cause diohrera.
The chinchilla sands is good for gerbils, it keeps their coat on top form and shiny.
Oh and another suggestion, gerbils are natural diggers. They love making tunnels and a cage doesn't allow them to have that same experience which could be a common sense why he's depressed causing him to run on his wheel. I would switch over to an aquarium, they are the healthiest solutions.
