My 4 yr feeble guinea pig wont eat/drink. HELP?
my guinea pig is roughly 4 y/o and he's been "sick" this past week. he hasn't eaten or drank anything contained by at least a week, and today he was trying to barry himself underneath his pellet dispenser, and under his wood shavings. Tonight i force fed him some water tonight, and that seem to make him a little bit better, but my question is very soon, what can i put in the water to make a mixture of both food (for nutrition) and marine? I (like infant formula for babies). I read on the internet to put vitamin c drops into the water, but i want something more substantial since he wont eat, and wont drink unless i give it to him. please support me..
First of all, please steal him to a vet as soon as you can- ask if they are experienced with guinea pigs (sometimes I find I know more about guinea pigs than vet who deal mostly with dogs and cats!).
A good source of nutrition is call Critical Care, and it is made by Oxbow. However, I am not sure if you can get it lacking going to the vet. I think you may be able to order it within emergencies. Here's the website http://www.oxbowanimalhealth.com/product...
Get a big syringe (take out the needle, of course). If you can't get the Critical Care, pulp some of his pellets up with hot water, consent to it cool, fill the syringe with it, and feed him this mixture. You can also try toddler food from jars (they seem to like carrot and sweet potatoes). You can put this into the syringe as well. Be sure to feed him slowly so he doesn't aspirate the food into his lungs. Also, do not rely with the sole purpose on baby food- they need the fiber found in Critical Care and/or pellet or they will develop gut stasis and bloat, which is very difficult to treat. Continue to give him some wet the same way. Here's the technique for holding and feeding him: http://jackiesguineapiggies.com/handfeed...
I am guessing that he must be consumption or drinking a little, or he would have already died. However, it is always motive for concern if he is not eating and drinking as much as normal. I judge you should be feeding him at least 40 mL of food every day within increments of 5-10 mL every few hours. But please check with your vet! Hope he gets better!
OK you must take him to the vets immediately. what you are doing feed him water is good but he needs to be syringe feed immediately. if he doesnt eat soon he will die.
i know because this have happened to me. guinea pigs can suffer from severe dental problems, he could have an abscess or over grown teeth at the back which we cannot see in need the vets instruments.
please make an appointment now and they will check him over and describe you what to do next. does he feel like he have any lumps around his jaw / face area?
the vet will syringe feed him and give him food call "recovery" or "critical care".
please be in motion now dont waste any time. goodluck x
