Why is my guinea pig itching himself so much?
My guinea pig has been itching himself a lot for olden times few weeks. He's about 8 months old, and there aren't any other animals for him to catch anything from (he has a brother guinea pig, but they aren't around each other a lot since its gotten colder). I make a contribution him vegetables, and he has enough food and water, i tweaking his bedding often. But his itching has even been wake me up at night because he will be pushin himself around in circles trying to reach whatever's itchin him. when im playing next to him and stuff, he hardly itches at all (and i'll have him out for a few hours). I enjoy seen some bald patches on his rump a month or two ago, but it seem to have gotten better and there's less bald nouns. (i also read that a disease or something starts from the ears down to the back). thats the only place he has any bald area's, too. I hold seen some scabs on his back, which i continue to look at to see whether there's more or if they get worse or anything, but they seem to be curative slowly for the most part. this morning i woke up, and he was itching himself, and i went to the bathroom, i come back, and he was lying on his back trying to itch himself, which i haven't see before. i always check him to see if theres anything noticably wrong next to him, but i don't see any more scabs or bald patches aside for the ones from what i've mentioned (no more have be appearing). what could be causing this itching? i dont think he's allergic to the bedding, he's had indistinguishable kind all his life, but how come he doesn't itch when he's external his cage? please help!
Answers: hi there!! sounds close to mites or ticks!! they can even get them from hair get some powder or spray it costs almost lb2.99 for it they are an orange colour!! good luck
Your little guy probably has mites. Find a vet that treats "exotics" or small animals and bring him contained by for a dose of Ivermectin. If you house the little fella on wood chips of any kind, clean the cage and introduce a cellulose bedding instead- Carefresh or Crittercare is just the thing. Wood chips can actually house mites.
Good luck with him, he sounds like he's really itchy.
