Would this be a correct rat shut within?
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/MULTI-STOREY-XXL-...
or is it too big or something?? I have a home made cabinet style cage for my womanly rats, and its pretty costy doing it again for my boys so i thought i'd buy one. Does it look safe enough?
wood is not good for rats they will chew on it and make it rufe. i would recommend a fish reservoir with ceder beading and a chew stick
The listing is ended, but whether the price was $395 you could buy a Feisty Ferret cage which can hold 8 rats and has 1/2" pole spacing, or a ferret nation, or a Martin's ruud cage which can hold 12 rats. Heck, you could buy 2 of any of these cages for the price of the one you showed.
Answers: I think that's a lovely coop! However, I would widen the platforms. They make simple wooden platforms that you can easily tag on to the cage via screws, that cost about $10 respectively. Just to give them more space to crowd together. The males love that.
There are a few things you should take into consideration.
1. The cage is cable, and this can cause damage to your rats' sensitive feet. Put something down over the flex for them to walk on to make it a little easier.
2. Do not put the boys and girls within the same room. When the boys smell the girls, they will go mental and possibly do damage to respectively other or to you! This doesn't always happen. Some people enjoy been known to keep males and females contained by the same room without a single mishap, but I follow the motto 'better safe than sorry'. Of course, whether you plan on getting your boys fixed, this won't be an issue.
3. How many rats do you have? I'd probably put up to four boys in that enclose, but because there just isn't much platform or walking space, I'd be a little concerned to put a few more within.
Other than that, I think the cage is perfect. Of course, us devoted ratty lovers all know that the only way to attain the best possible rat cage is to build it yourself. But barring that, the bigger the better.
its an amazing size. you can never own a big enough house for rats!
but im thinking that it looks like the wiring is too far apart and they could slip out.
my ferret have a cage similar to that. you might want to go look at it in a pet store back deciding.
Don't listen to the guy who said "fish tank near cedar bedding"
First of all, if you use a fish tank, the ammonia will build up from their pee and poo. Secondly, cedar (or pine) bedding is fruitless because it has harmful chemicals, which the rats will breathe in, later give them respiratory infections, myco, or even just cause them to die out of nowhere!
yes it looks fine.
